Extending Tank Warranties in Maine
If your underground petroleum storage tank (“ust”) is approaching its 30-year warranty expiration mark, it’s important to act early. Certain double-walled tanks may qualify for an additional 10-year warranty, but eligibility depends on meeting specific requirements and submitting all documentation before the deadline.
What’s required for an extension?
To qualify, tanks must:
- Pass the annual compliance inspection.
- Pass Precision testing of these below components:
- Tank Sumps and Interstitial Spaces.
- Piping Sumps and Interstitial Spaces.
- Have dispenser sumps installed and tested.
- Have double wall spill buckets installed and tested.
- Have Emergency Electrical Disconnect installed and tested.
- Include working leak detection and overfill protection systems.
- Complete registration for the extension prior to the 30-year expiration date listed in DEP records and the TankSmart database
Because every inspection, test, and any potential upgrades must be finalized before the warranty deadline, waiting until the last minute can create problems. If your tank is within two years of the 30-year mark, we recommend starting the process now to allow enough time for review and preparation.
At Portland Pump, our team of Maine DEP–certified installers and inspectors can help determine if your tank qualifies and manage the steps required for approval. From inspections to paperwork, we’ll guide you through the entire process to secure the extension.
